April 11 2008 Alaska Newsletter

Dear Readers,

Spring is on the way (though it’s been temporarily buried under three inches of fresh snow)! Small flocks of snow buntings are flushing from bare gravel, the bald eagles that nest down the road have returned, and the buds on the cottonwoods are starting swell, filling the air with a pungent scent on warm, sunny days. With sixteen hours of visible light and a six minute gain per day, we are quickly moving towards those long days when night is not much more than a shadow. This is one of my favorite times of year.

Since my last newsletter, I’ve posted three new articles on the Alaska site at

Book Review – Ada Blackjack
Motivated by a desire to provide a better life for her son, Ada Blackjack sets out on an arctic expedition from which she emerges as the sole survivor.

Airport Pizza in Nome
Airport Pizza has been featured on NPR's Weekend Edition, the CBS Evening News and a wide variety of newspapers and magazines across the country because of their pizza delivery service. They also serve up great food!

Interview with author Heather Lende
Heather Lende is the author of If You Lived Here, I’d Know Your Name, a collection of stories about life (and death) in Haines, Alaska. Learn more about her perspective on writing and life in Haines in this interview.

I hope you find something that you enjoy. Have a great week!
