The New House in the Forest - Book Review

The Jenks family wants to build a new home, but each has a different idea about where their new house should be built: near town, near electricity, near running water, or near where the animals live.

The New House in the Forest by Lucy Sprague Mitchell, illustrated by Eloise Wilkin

When the family all discuss their preferences for the location of their new home father thinks he has just the perfect spot. They all jump in the car to drive out to look at it. They drive to a little forest that is not too far from town and has a winding river running through it. Timmy and Judy are sure that lots of bears, squirrels, owls and all sorts of other animals must live here also.

As their home is being build all the animals have something to say about it. The squirrels donít want the trees cut down, and the bear thinks they should just live in a cave. The carpenters build them a lovely home and the family moves in.

Mr. Owl wonders why the children are asleep in bed in the middle of the night when he is awake. But they donít hear him because they are sound asleep in their bed in the new house in the forest.

Note: All Little Golden Books are from my personal library.

Little Golden Books have been available since 1942. Originally they were produced to make high-quality childrenís books affordable to the average American family. They were initially priced at just twenty-five-cents each. These sturdy, colorful books appealed to children and adults alike. They introduced us to new friends such as The Poky Little Puppy , The Tawny Scrawny Lion and The Saggy Baggy Elephant. They celebrated with universal themes such as the need to feel at home in the world while we enjoyed Seven Little Postman and Johnnyís Machines. They helped us understand what might be happening at home The New Baby and Busy Timmy. If you grew up with Little Golden Books you probably loved them all. Share them today with your children and grandchildren and relive the magic.
