Chocolate Cake Mix

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/3 cup powdered milk
  • 1/2 cup baking cocoa
  • 1 tsp. instant coffee granules

Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Place the mixture in a one quart wide-mouth canning jar and press it firmly into the bottom of the jar. Layer the sugar on top, pressing it down firmly. In a small bowl, mix the powdered milk, cocoa powder, and instant coffee granules together. Layer the mixture on top of the other ingredients in the canning jar.

Screw the 2 piece lid on the jar, then place a circle of fabric over the lid. Secure the fabric with a piece of thin ribbon or raffia.

Attach a card to the jar with the following directions -
    To make a chocolate cake...
Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour a 9" x 13" cake pan. Place the cake mix in large mixing bowl and stir. Make a well in the center & add ..... 1/2 cup vegetable oil + 2 beaten eggs+1-3/4 cup warm water. Mix until all ingredients are well blended. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Bake at 350° for about 35 minutes. Cake is done if the top springs back when pressed lightly in the center. Cool the cake completely on a wire rack before frosting.
