Meditation and Prayer in Memory of Father
Sometimes, special events make up memories of a father, but there may be other events that linger on with us. For example, there could be a saying or story from a father that guides us the rest of our life. This is the kind of memory I've based this prayer upon. May it give you comfort with your father, as it has with mine.
"Before my memory fades away
I'll take some time to walk today
Following where my father tread
Sharing guidance as he led.
Father's words, chosen wisely
Shaped my life and others' rightly.
This verbal legacy, for his progeny
Strolling along, speaking wisely -
Follow fast the golden rule
Unto others do
As you wish done to you."
While sitting still, take time for a meditation on your father's memory. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in and release it. Then, begin even and regular breathing such as one count to inhale and one count to exhale. Continue this rhythmic pattern throughout your meditation.
Breath is a tie between body, mind, and emotions. Regular breathing, when feeling upset, can restore feelings of harmony.
Think about an appreciation for your father. Then begin a period of quiet and stillness, first reflecting on a positive memory, then listening to the soothing sounds of your regular breathing.
After a few minutes, finish your meditation by inhaling deeply, and slowly exhaling. Stretch out and go on with your day. Whenever you feel the need to "be" with your father, sit quietly in meditation and think about past good times together.
