Sea Adventure Books for Children

Sea Adventure Books for Children
Sea adventure books allow children to travel the world. They contain fishing, whaling, pirates or sea battles stories. The adventure books are set in all time periods: past, present and future.

In sea adventure books, children learn about the crew’s daily life. A gifted writer explains the hierarchy of the crew members and their duties without distracting the reader’s attention from the book’s fast pace.

A pirate sea adventure book tells about them and their code of honor. Their ship flies a black flag with a white skull and cross bones. The adventure books contain sword fights and booming cannons. There is a captain who can be either sinister or benign. And usually, there is booty, a treasure to capture or guard from others.

Ah, to sail the seas in search of a buried treasure. There is a secret map where X marks the spot. A motley crew sails behind closely for they desire the treasure, too. Will the first ship dig up the treasure and return safely? Children love the adventure and mystery.

Also, sea adventure books take children to exotic locales. There are deserted islands, various ports of call and distant lands. The high seas become the superhighway to adventure.

The techniques used to secure the catch and the hardships are revealed in whaling and fishing books. The booties for these sailors are not gold or gems, but the fish or whales. They will later, if the catch is good, trade them for gold or gems. This life is considered more noble than a pirate’s life.

Sea battles transport children straight to the action. They can sail with Admiral Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar or stand with John Paul Jones during a Revolutionary War sea battle. Sea battles sometimes are historical and impart information about the sailors and stakes involved in pivotal points in the past. There are other books where the sea battle is a figment of the author’s imagination. In every case, the valiant captain and crew fight for the honor and survival of their country. The returning crew is hailed as great patriots.

Merchant sea adventure books tell of the brave people who travel the oceans for trade goods. The sea adventure book may take the reader to China, Japan, the East Indies or some other faraway place. These books tell of the local inhabitants and lifestyles because the merchant must interact with them to conduct business.

Take a moment and enjoy a sea adventure book. Stand at the ship’s bow and scan the blue waters and feel the spray on the skin.

Mary Pope Osborne of The Magic Tree House series fame has written six chapter books based on Homer’s The Odyssey. The Odyssey is one of the oldest sea adventure books known to man. It chronicles the adventures and misadventures of Odysseus as he returns home after the Trojan War. Tales from the Odyssey series are for children eight-years-old and older. They love the action-packed books.
