Healthy Snacking

Snacking often gets a bad wrap because people automatically think of potato chips, pretzels and candy but that doesn’t have to be the case. A little snack in between meals actually has lot of health benefits as it can alleviate overeating and eating the wrong foods for lack of something healthy. The rule is to never go more than 4-5 hours without eating so if you know you are going to be occupied or away from the kitchen, make sure you stock your desk or bag with a snack or two just in case.

Take a look at these ideas for some healthy and delicious snacks. They are good for pre-workout, on-the-go, something to tie you over until dinner or even as a dessert!

The Laughing Cow
2 multigrain rice cakes + 1 wedge of The Laughing Cow Light Creamy Swiss cheese spread = a satisfying 2 Weight Watchers point snack.

Kashi TLC Chewy Granola Bars
Although I am usually not a fan of cereal bars or granola bars (most are packed with sugar and sodium) Kashi makes a few that are fabulous. Enjoy one with a glass of skim milk.

Baked Oatmeal
I must admit that I am obsessed with Baked Oatmeal. A slice of it with a cup of decaf tea has become my favorite breakfast, snack and dessert. It makes me happy no matter what time of the day! See related links for my recipe.

A cup of fruit salad
Slice up some cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple and throw in some grapes and strawberries and you are set. I like to toss mine with a teaspoon of marmalade for some added sweetness.

Edamame
Edamame (soy beans) are high in protein and fun to eat. Keep a bag in the freezer and microwave them for a quick snack.

Hard boiled eggs
Another great source of protein, hard boiled eggs are perfect to keep in the fridge for a snack or even an on-the-go breakfast.

94% fat free microwave popcorn
Five cups is only 1 Weight Watchers point so go crazy!!

Here are some more ideas…

Sliced apple with a handful of almonds
Polly-O Part Skim String Cheese and an orange
Baby carrots with hummus
Baked tortillas chips with salsa
Dried cranberries or raisins and a banana

Try out some of my ideas or make up your own and start snacking today!
