The Cow in Apple Time - Book Review

The Cow in Apple Time is a poem by Robert Frost. The Pulitzer Award winner is America’s beloved poet. In fact, Frost was awarded the Pulitzer four times.

Robert Frost was born in San Francisco, California March 26, 1874. He was named after the Confederate General, Robert E. Lee. Robert Frost and his family lived in various places in the United States of America.

Robert Frost was affiliated with various universities in his lifetime. He was a Fellow at The University of Michigan. Frost was a Professor of English at Amherst College before and after his stint at The University of Michigan.

One occupation, which influences his poems, is that of a farm owner. Robert Frost had several farms during his lifetime. Life on the farms probably gave him his outlook on rural life. His rural poems transport the reader to the peace and hilarious situations found on a farm.

The Cow in Apple Time is one such poem. Frost might have had a cow who did not eat and act as she should. The cow in the poem is headstrong. She does not stay in the field as she should; she does not eat what she should. Grass not apples are to be consumed by cows. This is the lesson she learns at the poem’s end.

The rhyming poem, The Cow in Apple Time, is for the inquisitive little one. The picture book tells what happens to those who do things they should not do. The poem is hilarious, but teaches a life lesson. After reading the poem with a preschooler, talk about the consequences of actions.

Dean Yeagle’s illustrations are excellent. The wayward cow’s facial features are so animated in the picture book. The pencil sketches of the cow and farm are priceless. Each page is a work of art begging for a picture frame. Yeagle is an award-winning illustrator whose clients include Walt Disney Productions, Warner Bros and many others.

Poetry Speaks to Children is another wonderful picture book to introduce children to poetry. The book contains many poems to delight a child. There is a CD included containing poems which the child will love to hear repeatedly. Share the world of poetry with them. The picture book is perfect for the classroom as well as the home.
