Our Lady of Fatima by William T. Walsh

The oldest of the three children of Fatima, Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, passed away on February 13, 2005 at age 97. Lucia was the longest living of the three cousins who witnessed the extraordinary apparitions of the Blessed Mother in a tiny village in central Portugal near Fatima in 1916 and 1917.
Our Lady of Fatima by William T. Walsh
Of modern day interest in particular is the secret third message that Sister Lucia carried with her nearly to the present day. It has been associated with the assassination attempt on the life Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981 - the anniversary of the last of the childrens' apparitions in 1917.

I recommend this 240 page paperback, published by Image, for its historical accounting, but mostly because it is a reminder that the simple truths in life are still the most important.

What was important to meditate and pray for nearly 100 years ago is even more needed today, and that is sending loving thoughts to all creation for the transformation of coldness and separation into kindness and caring with all our world family. We can each make an important contribution to world peace by practicing being peaceful every day in our ordinary lives.

May the events in the lives of the children, Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco Marto inspire your spiritual life as they have mine - even to the extent that I took the name 'Jacinta' at my confirmation.

Recommended!
