Get Ready For Spring
Guest Author - Susan Thompson

It is almost spring and every one is antsy to get outside and get going, but in spring the weather doesn’t always cooperate. There are some great indoor activities that you and your kids can do indoors to get ready for outdoor weather.

At this time of year it is a good idea to go through your outdoor sporting equipment. Over the winter, sporting equipment can become worn and dangerous to use without proper inspection. Bikes are the biggest threat to your child’s safety if they are not working properly. Check to make sure the chain is not rusty if it is get some bike chain oil and put a small amount on the chain. Then crank the pedal by hand so the oil distributes evenly. While you are hand pedaling the bike check to be sure the brakes work before your child gets on the bike. Check all nuts and bolts to be sure all are tight. If the bike needs any major repair, take it to your local repair shop. Now your kid’s bikes will be ready when the weather breaks.

Starting an indoor garden is a fun activity for the whole family. Use an empty egg carton. Fill each of the individual egg holders with dirt. Add several seeds to each cup and lightly water. Next set them in a warm area of the house that gets plenty of sunshine. Have the children lightly water them daily. When it is warm enough outside, transplant the seedlings into your outdoor garden.

Rainy spring days are great for going through your children’s clothes from last summer. Have the kids try on things to see if they fit. Make a list of clothing items you will need to purchase for summer. Donate all unwanted items to charity or a neighbor with smaller children. Wash any items which may have developed those mysterious stains that were not there when you packed them away. Now your children will be ready when that first day of shorts weather comes.

Spring is also a great time of year to investigate your summer vacation. Go online with your kids to look into family vacation spots. Whether you are looking for a beach vacation across the country or a campground locally, most businesses have websites with a ton of information about their amenities, rates, and availability.

Don’t forget to check any outdoor play equipment. Winter can wreak havoc on swing sets, tree houses, and other play ground equipment. Check all play equipment for stability and sharp edges that could cut your little one.

Here’s hoping you have a wonderful spring!
