The words and actions of people we find difficult screech across the grooves of our mind.
We can protect ourselves by:
1. Avoiding contact;
2. Observing what they do or say, while maintaining neutral feelings and thoughts;
3. Doing the opposite of being the mental observer, by being surrendered and open when they are calm, allowing new grooves of a different reality to be recorded in our mind. During this new recording we do not have to give up our own position or way of thinking - we are expanding our base of experience.
If we are the person others avoid, here is a meditation about harmony -
Meditation for self inquiry
Sit comfortably, eyes closed, hands folded in lap. Begin regulated breathing such as 2 counts to breathe in, and 2 counts to breathe out. Continue this pattern, (without actually saying the numbers), throughout the meditation.
Read the following and spend some time reflecting upon these ideas:
Consider that we learn mainly by trial and error. After we have continual problems in relating harmoniously, we may begin to ask ourselves why.
After the reasons outside ourselves are exhausted, we begin to walk the path of personal self-improvement.
The sincere desire to know our deepest level leads to the most basic underlying state of harmony - thinking kind thoughts and acting kindly.
With practice in living harmoniously, the days of being a difficult person to be around may disappear.
Finish your meditation with a deep breath and the resolve to practice kindness.
