Stars and Stripes Cakes

Create a colorful, patriotic cake for your holiday party or picnic! Here's decorating ideas for two styles of flag cakes.

Stars & Stripes Cakes
  • 1 box yellow or white cake mix, or use your favorite yellow or white cake recipe.
  • Whipped topping such as Cool Whip® or Cool Whip Lite®, 1 - 12 oz. container. Use an additional 8 oz. container if like the topping extra thick or if you're decorating the sides of the cake too.
  • fresh blueberries - 1 pint
  • fresh strawberries - about 1 quart, or
  • red raspberries - about 1 quart

Preparation -
Bake the cake in a greased and floured 9" X 13" cake pan.

Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes.

Carefully remove the cake from the pan to a serving plate or board, or cool in the pan and decorate only the top of the cake, as shown on right.

Decorate the cake no more than about 3 hours before serving.

Spread a generous layer of whipped topping over the cake. Arrange blueberries in the upper left hand corner of the cake for the blue background. Jumbo blueberries look best if you wont be adding any white stars. The stars can be mini marshmallows, mini marshmallow stars, or pipe on the stars using the whipped topping.

Cut large strawberries in half lengthwise... use smaller berries and red raspberries whole. Arrange the berries in rows for the red stripes.

Fill a pastry bag with whipped topping. Use it with a wide decorating tip to build up and define the white stripes.

Keep the decorated cake refrigerated until until ready to serve.

NordicWare 9x13 Rectangular Natural Commercial Bakeware Cake Pan with Lid

NordicWare 9" x 13" Rectangular Natural Commercial Bakeware Cake Pan with Lid
Bake your cake in this pan then cover it with the metal lid. This sturdy cake pan is perfect for taking cakes and desserts to picnics and potlucks. It also serves to keep cakes and other baked goods fresh when at home. This commercial quality, well-made pan will outlast dozens of those oblong cake pans with plastic lids.
