Berenstain Bears - and Too Much TV review

Berenstain Bears - and Too Much TV review
Stan and Jan Berenstain, children books authors, do it again. Their The Berenstain Bears and TOO Much TV is as timely today as when the couple first wrote the picture book. We spend too much time watching television!

Mama, Papa, Brother and Sister are the Berenstain Bears. They are the main characters in the animal book series. They live in a tree house in Bear Country. One day, Mama realizes her family spends too much free time sitting and watching TV. Her cubs return from school and watch TV instead of playing outside, making crafts or just talking with each other. Papa returns from work and does the same thing.

Mama knows something has to change. She says there is too much TV watching to her family after dinner. She pronounces a ‘No TV WEEK’ in the Berenstain Bears house. Papa, too!

Papa tries to evade the ban by saying he has to keep abreast of the news. Mama gives him the evening newspaper. He tries again. Papa says he needs to know the weather. Mama opens the window and tells him to stick out his hand.

The first evening doesn’t go very well. The Berenstain cubs and Papa have forgotten what things there are to do. TV withdrawal is hard on the threesome. Papa falls asleep. The cubs just sit. The following evening, Mama suggests sitting outside. After a few awkward starts, they are discuss things happening around them.

As the week progress, so does Papa and the Berenstain cubs. They go on nature walks and play outside. There is a shopping trip to Bear Country Mall. The cubs purchase items to occupy their time. Brother buys a puzzle. Sister buys a knitting tool. Papa is sneaky. He tries to watch television in the electronics store.

At the week’s end, everyone is free to watch TV. Papa is the only one who watches the television. The others have other activities to occupy their time. After a period of time, Papa turns off the television and goes fishing. Mama is happy to see her family involved in other activities than watching TV.

Normally, the Berenstain Bears picture books are recommended for children ages 4-8 to read. This text is a little advance. I recommend this picture book for six-year-old children and older. Also, the book is a little dated. There is talk of a black & white TV and an antenna on the roof.

Obesity is a major problem with our children. Jan and Stan Berenstain's picture book, The Berenstain Bears and TOO Much TV, is a great place to start. Read the picture book to or with your children. Implement a 'No TV Week' in your household. This includes videos, games and the computer for modern children. Get the children moving. Mom and Dad get moving, too.
