Beer Fox Tip of the Week

If you are not from the United States of America, but are planning a trip to the states, “as part of the U.S. experience, experience beer.” In 2010 President Obama passed the Travel Promotion Act to get the word out to tourists from other countries that we have a lot to offer. Besides the usual museums and historical places of interest, the United States is rich in festivals that celebrate the seasons, ethnic foods from all over the world, and the most exciting and diverse beer menu to go with those foods.

Stats from the Brewers Association point out that “Craft brewers operate in 344 congressional districts and the majority of Americans live within 10 miles of a brewery.” What does this mean for tourists? In your travels, keep your eyes open for large and small breweries and brewpubs. Ask the locals where they are. Visit them and enjoy the diversity of American Beer, whether it focuses on hops from the Pacific Northwest, Belgian yeast, Canadian grain, southern pecans, or the crazy ideas from the most free-thinking brewers in the world.

A little old lady is walking around in a supermarket calling out, Crisco, Crissssssscoooo!'

Soon an assistant manager approaches and says, 'Ma’am, the Crisco is in aisle 3.'

The woman replies, 'Oh, I'm not looking for the cooking stuff. I'm calling my husband. He's in here somewhere'

The clerk is astonished.

'Your husband's name is Crisco?'

The woman answers, 'Oh no, no, no. I only call him that when we're out in public'

'I see,' said the clerk.

'What do you call him at home?'

“After five consecutive years of hosting SAVOR℠: An American Craft Beer & Food Experience in Washington, D.C., the Brewers Association is bringing the event to New York City. In 2013, SAVOR will be held on June 14 and 15 at the Metropolitan Pavilion and adjoining Altman Building in Manhattan. The two-night event will return to the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. the year after on May 9 and 10, 2014.”

“As the benchmark beer and food pairing event, SAVOR’s format will remain the same—an intimate and engaging reception, with a menu carefully designed by Brewers Association culinary consultant Adam Dulye, chef/owner of The Monk’s Kettle and The Abbot’s Cellar in San Francisco. As in years past, small and independent breweries representing all geographic regions of the country will be selected to participate by a lottery drawing. Guests will be served by the notable personalities behind the craft beer brands and have an opportunity to interact with them during private tastings throughout the two nights.”

All profits … that’s 100%, my friends … all profits from ticket sales will go to to Metro CareRing (MCR). It’s a tough year for many folks, and MetroCareRing’s downtown Denver food pantry is there to feed the hungry. “Participating, big-hearted breweries are donating their time and beers to join the cause,” says beer evangelist Marty Jones. English Barleywine – 13.40% ABV

More than fantastic! This deep mahogany beer encircles your head with rich caramel sweetness, fruitiness and the boozy aromas that can only come from gentle aging in Pappy Van Winkle 23 bourbon barrels. Chocolate, vanilla, coconut, oak, brown sugar and maple syrup flavors mix with brandy warmth, dipped in raisins and plums. Smooth and drinkable, this is a superb accomplishment.
