Beer Fox Tip of the Week

When planning a beer tasting dinner, you might be tempted to impress those attending with a huge menu of beers. Don't overdo it. After too many tastes, the tastebuds can experience palate overload. Limit your menu to 6-8 beers, with a maximum pour of about 4 ounces. Taste from low to high intensity. Reserve light spritzy Bieres Brut or Lambics for early in the evening. Use Pale Ales and IPAs to quench a spicy dish. Merge rich meats and sauces with Belgian Dubbels, Porters and Brown Ales. You may even wish for an intermezzo of a Wild Ale. Top off the evening with a Russian Imperial Stout or Belgian Quad with a chocolaty dessert topped in cream.

Beer Fox Laugh of the Week

A blonde is overweight so her doctor put her on a diet.

"I want you to eat regularly for two days," he tells her. "Then skip a day and repeat the procedure for two weeks. The next time see you, you'll have lost at least five pounds."

When the blonde returns, she's lost nearly forty pounds. "Why that's amazing," the doctor says. "Did you follow my instructions?"

The blonde nods. "I'll tell you though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day."

"From hunger you mean?" asks the doctor.

"No," replies the blonde, "from skipping."

The Brewers Association, dedicated to promoting small and independent craft brewers in America, has just announced its 2011 Board of Directors. New to the Board this year are John Mallett of Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo, MI; Steve Hindy of Brooklyn Brewery in Brooklyn, NY; Steve Bradt of Freestate Brewing Company in Lawrence, Kansas; and Eric Wallace of Left Hand Brewing Company in Longmont, Colorado.

Other members are Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, Delaware, Vice Chair; Mark Edelson of Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant in DE, PA, and NJ, Secretary/Treasurer; Nick Matt of F.X. Matt Brewing Company in Utica, NY, Chair; Kim Jordan of New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, CO, Executive Commitee as Past Board Chair; Dick Cantwell of Elysian Brewing Company in Seattle, WA; Gary Fish of Deschutes Brewery in Bend, OR; Chris P. One more news flash: Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant will open their 9th location in late 2011 at 8400 Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is the first Iron Hill Brewery to enter the Philly City limits.

Craft Beer of the Week Award

Boont Amber Ale - Anderson Valley Brewing Company, Boonville, California, USA
Style: Amber Ale, 5.8% ABV

This brilliant, coppery-amber body lies beneath a bubbly, thick head of cream that lasts and lingers on the sides of the glass. The nose is of sweet, caramelly malt with distinctive herbal and flowery notes. On the palate it is fresh, malty, and touched with caramel sweetness that lasts into the finish. Mouthfeel is medium with moderate carbonation and a slick chewiness. Simply delicious!
