Summer vacation starts in the month of June. No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers’ dirty looks! Hey! Wait a minute, board, picture and chapter books are fun. Make the library a favorite summer vacation spot.

The library has special activities planned for all age levels. Preschool and young elementary students have reading groups. Volunteers come in and read books. There are group discussions on the board and picture books. Each week covers a different subject. One can be about sharks, another about pirates and another about magic. Children of all ages keep reading skills fresh over the summer.Check the library schedule.

Okay, you do not want to read a book. The library has mini summer camp. In the summer camp, animals and plants are discussed. The names of local animals, birds, trees and plants are taught. Learn something new to share with classmates when school starts.

Children are taught new dances. Try and learn a Polish Polka. Move your feet to a Middle Eastern tune. Swing to the Hawaiian music. Make a costume to wear with your new dance.

At the local library, brush up on computer skills. Or learn a new program. Excel, WordPerfect, Outlook Express, E-mail and PowerPoint lessons are given over the summer. Learn to prepare paper documents. Young writers learn how a computer can help organize thoughts. Again, check the library schedule.

Movies are shown each week during the summer. Get together with a group of friends and watch a movie. Travel down the Mississippi River with Huck Finn. Sing the fantastic songs of The Lion King. Fly with Harry Potter during a Quidditch match. Don’t forget the movies are free and the library is air-conditioned.

The library is a great summer vacation spot. There is so much to do. Arts’ & Crafts is another fun activity. Come and make something new each week. There is jewelry making, working with clay and scrapbooking to name a few.

Stop by the library for a schedule of each month’s library activities. Post it where can be seen by the family. The family can vote on the activities to attend. Highlight the agreed upon ones. Older students can take an extra schedule to discuss the available sessions with friends. Decide which one the group members want to attend. Ride bicycles to the library. There are bike racks.
