On the Farm - Book Review
David Elliot writes On the Farm. Toddlers and early elementary children learn the different animals on a farm. The picture book is for children between four and eight-years-old. Thirty pages comprise the hardcover edition.
The family farm is becoming a part of the past. Farm animals which were once a common daily sight are now found in zoos and State Fairs. Unfortunately, State Fairs are closing every year. David Elliot writes his picture book to fill this void. On the Farm gives children a glimpse of the different animals and their daily function on a farm.
David Elliot describes each farm animal and its job in a short poem. The poems are short and simple. Elliot uses words children understand. His rhyming verse captures kids’ attention. Children love the rhythm pattern of poetry. They love to sway their little bodies as they hear about each animal.
The dog, cow, pig, cat, hen, rabbit and duck have short poems. However, David Elliot does not stop. He describes animals not found in many farm animal books. They include a snake, turtle, goose, bees, bull, rooster and other animals, too. The Barn Cat tale is interesting. Many kids do not know a farm cat has a job. It is to catch mice. A farm cat’s life is so unlike the life of today’s pampered kitty.
Holly Mead does the illustrations which are wood block prints and watercolor. Her work is very colorful. Look at On the Farm's book cover Since the illustrations are abstract, I recommend On the Farm for children between four and eight-years-old. At this age, they can easily identify the farm animals. Also, since they are familiar with the main farm animals, the bull, pony and snake and other inclusions expand their knowledge of a larger variety of animals. Enjoy the rhyming verse while learning about farm animals!
