Herbal Carminatives

Guest Author - Rebecca Lee Graf

Digestive discomfort can be very painful. It can be downright debilitating. Gas can cause pressure and even lead to nausea and further upset stomach. Herbal carminatives can help relieve the gas pain and give relieve to the digestive system.

Nature gives mankind many ways relieve pain and treat ailments. Herbal carminatives contain volatile oils that are complex and counteract the effects of gas. Taken correctly, they can give the entire digestive system relief and even repair any damage done to it.

Most carminatives are consumed as an infusion or herbal tea. It is the distillation process that releases the oils to be active for the digestive system. Steep the seeds or leaves of the herbal carminatives to release the oils. Drink the infusion as many as three times a day to get the best digestive benefits.

The following is a list of herbal carminatives and how they can be used: ajwain seed, angelica, aniseed, basil, benzoin, bergamot, black pepper, boswellia, calamus, camphor, caraway, cardamom, catnip, cayenne pepper, celery seed, chamomile, cinnamon, clary sage, cumin, dill , epazote, eucalyptus , fennel, galangal root, garlic, gentian, ginger, goldenrod, hops, hyssop, jambul, juniper, lavender, lemon balm, lemon verbena, lovage, motherwort, mustard, myrrh, myrtle, oregano, parsley, pennyroyal, peppermint, periwinkle, pleurisy root, rosemary, sage , sandalwood, savory, sesame, spearmint, spikenard, sweet marjoram, tansy, tarragon, thyme, valerian, vanilla, wintergreen , wormwood.

As you can see from the list, many of the carminatives are herbs that many people cook with. Basil, black pepper, cinnamon, and thyme are just a few from this list that you can find in most kitchens. This means that when cooking with these herbs, you are placing digestive herbs in your foods. As you are eating your meals, you are also consuming carminatives. Flavoring your foods are also ways to treat your body from a medicinal perspective.

When food is consumed, the digestion process is used to process it. Carminatives help stimulate the digestive system and eliminate gas as it helps foods get processed correctly. A well-working digestive system helps keep the body working and even helps in keeping the body healthy.

Carminatives can be taken directly as infusions or indirectly as food flavorings. A savvy cook is one that knows the benefits of the foods and flavorings that they are serving their family. See how much these carminatives can help your family while bringing a smile to the dinner table.

Note: Always check with your physician, pharmacist, or herbalist before relying on any medication including herbs.
