Children are being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders at earlier ages as more is learned about the first behaviors and clusters of symptoms that were observed in individuals diagnosed in later years. It is important to remember that autism affects individuals: each child already has a personality, preferences, and individual expressions of autistic behavior.

The symbol used by advocates for autism awareness is the multicolored puzzle piece ribbon. Families may face the challenges of finding a combination of strategies and supports that benefit their children; working with teachers and administrators who implement programs in classrooms; or searching for consultants and specialists who understand how each child with autism fits into the family, school and neighborhood.

There are several diagnoses on the autism spectrum that alert us to the diversity of the condition, but children within each diagnostic group also have a wide variation in how their diagnosis is expressed. The best strategies for supporting children and teens with autism and managing the behaviors that complicate their interactions show respect for the person's individuality as well as the challenges of the condition.
