Herbal Anti-Spasmodics

Who has not had muscles cramps or muscles that spasm and cause discomfort? We all have. We have also turned to medications to relieve these muscle spasms. These are called anti-spasmodic medications. They relieve us of our pain and comfort us. Like many people, seeking “drugs” is not on our agenda. Turning to herbal anti-spasmodics could be a healthier alternative.

When muscles spasm, they cause increased tension within the body. Those nasty tension headaches are caused by muscle spasms. It can also affect the nervous system and radiate pain throughout the body.

Anti-spasmodics helps the muscles relax through the nervous system. Muscles contract because the nerves are stimulating them. Cease the stimulation and the muscles begin to relax.

Muscle contraction occurs throughout the body. Think about your circulatory system. Blood vessels run throughout your body. In and out of muscles, they wind their way to deliver nutrients. When muscles constrict, the circulatory system can be affected. What herbs have been said to help with the circulatory spasms? Black Cohosh, Lavendar, and Motehrwort are a few.

The digestive system is highly affected by muscles. The entire system is based on the movement of the digestive muscles to move the food from the mouth and throughout the body. Muscles that tighten cause nausea, constipation, and reflux. Many people have used chamomile, peppermint, sage, thyme, barberry, and even dill to ease these muscle contractions.

Breathing can be effected by muscle spasms. Herbal anti-spasmodics that have been used in these cases include garlic, thyme, angelica root, oregano, and aniseed.

As with any herb or drug, you need to talk to a professional before taking. A cough is a spasmodic occurrence. Though we would like to take the cough completely away, many times the cough is part of the healing process. There can also be interactions with other herbs and drugs.
