Join a Group and Get Help with Your Goals

Do you need help in achieving a specific goal? If you find yourself feeling isolated and unmotivated, perhaps joining a group of likeminded people will provide you with the enthusiasm you need to get moving.

I know first hand how helpful groups can be. For the last decade, I've only been able to write short stories when I'm part of a critique group. I can write anything else on my own— features, breaking news, profiles, personal experience articles, long fiction, proposals, book and movie reviews. However I can't get into writing, polishing and submitting short fiction unless I'm going through the process with others.

Groups are a wonderful source of support, encouragement and useful information. In addition to writing groups, I also belong to groups that deal with nonprofit management, small businesses and goal setting.

No matter your area of interest, there is a group out there for you. Below are sites that make it easier to connect with people who share your aspirations and dreams.

Dailystrength.org

Created by internet veterans who worked with other large communities on the web, Dailystrength.org offers more than 500 communities of people facing a variety of life challenges including medical conditions, mental health issues as well as career changes, unemployment and family problems. On this site you can make friends, join support groups, journal, track goals, share photos and offer encouragement to other users.

Yahoo.com

According to Wikipedia Yahoo! Groups is one of the world’s largest collections of online discussion boards. I’ve been a member of at least one Yahoo! Group since 2003. Group messages can be read and posted by email or on the Group's webpage like a web forum.

To find a group go to the Yahoo! Groups homepage, type what you’re looking for in the search box under "Find a Yahoo! Group", then click Search to scan the Yahoo! Groups directory for group names and descriptions that match up.

LinkedIn.com

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network with over 120 million members and growing rapidly. Joining groups on LinkedIn has the added bonus of allowing you to invite group members you’re not currently connected to into your network. And it’s not all about work. I’m a member of a Vegetarian Cooking group via my LinkedIn profile.

43things.com

On the goal setting site 43things.com, you can find out who shares your passion for fly fishing or knitting by entering a search term in the box provided at the top of every page. You can connect with enthusiasts interested in everything under the sun. Right now on the site close to 1500 people have a goal to “grow my own vegetables.” 3400 want to “lose 15 pounds.” Another 2500 want to “dance in the rain.” Learning the “Thriller Dance” is an ambition of 2700 members of the site. On 43things you can journal and cheer other users. When you complete a goal you can explain how you did it and offer to help others.
