Simple Ways to Stop Overeating

by Monica Neave

In her book Fit from Within, Victoria Moran offers 101 simple secrets to change your body and your life forever. Her secrets are based on a mind-body-spirit approach that helped her overcome a lifetime of overeating, fad dieting, and weight cycling. The following are some of the best suggestions from her book on how to stop overeating.

Slow Down & Sit Down
Are you one of the many who eat while driving, working, surfing the net, or watching t.v.? If so you may be setting yourself up for overeating. When you eat on the run you’re focused on something else and your body and brain don’t get a chance to register that you’ve eaten so you tend to eat more. To prevent this from happening Moran suggests eating at a table with a nice place setting, a candle, or music. If this is not possible reading an interesting magazine instead of focusing on work, the t.v., or internet is also a good option. Doing this allows your body and brain enough time to feel full and helps you become more aware of how much you’re eating.

Stay Centered In Today
Staying focused on today means "you can’t stuff yourself and promise that you’ll be extra good tomorrow, because there is no tomorrow" writes Moran. It’s existential eating where all you have to worry about is this meal and this day. There is no need to worry whether you’ll be eating healthy tomorrow or a month from now because today is all that matters. And this makes eating healthy a more manageable goal.

Eat Enough
According to Moran people undereat because they believe it’s virtuous and that others will admire them. The problem with this is that when you’re constantly starving the only thing you can think about is food. She suggests that you learn to eat moderately and not marginally. If this is difficult to do because you don’t trust your appetite, then look around and take your cue from those who eat sensibly. People who eat enough often eat more than you do but when they’re done with their meal they’re done eating until the next meal.

Give Thanks Before & After Meals
"I wouldn’t be surprised if some people could lose weight and keep it off for life by doing nothing other than eating only what they can, in good conscience, ask a blessing on" states Moran. She believes that giving thanks, or simply having a moment of silence before a meal has a calming effect that leads to more sensible eating. Giving thanks after the meal can also be great for those who have trouble stopping because it signals your mind that the meal is over.

Leave Something On Your Plate
This may seem un-natural at first but according to Moran the more you practice this the more selective you become about what you eat. Those who don’t overeat often leave something on their plate, stop eating when they’re full, and don’t force themselves to finish something they don’t like just because it’s on their plate. If you were brought up in a clean-your-plate type of household this may be difficult to do but the more you practice the easier it gets.
