Healthy Joints For Life - Book Review
“Healthy Joints for Life” is an 8-week research backed program designed to reduce joint inflammation and pain without medications or surgery. The author, Richard Diana, M.D. is an orthopedic doctor who is an attending surgeon at Yale-New Haven Hospital and is currently a Clinical Instructor at Yale School of Medicine. He is a former NFL player who has worked as an orthopedic consultant for the Boston Red Sox and has been named a Top 100 Doctor in America.
Dr. Diana's mother suffered from rheumatoid arthritis (RA). He watched helplessly as her treatments of constant injections and anti-inflammatory medicines failed to alleviate joint pain and prevent the progression of her disease. It was his mother's battle with RA and a reunion with Diana's NFL teammates that became his inspiration for the book, “Healthy Joints For Life.” At the reunion, Dr. Diana became keenly aware of all the musculoskeletal and joint damage his former teammates developed over the years. Dr. Diana discovered many had back problems as well as knee and hip replacements, further motivating him to develop a unique non-surgical approach to treat and reduce joint inflammation.
This book goes into great detail in chapter one and two about the science of inflammation and how it can lead to joint damage and pain. With my background as a nurse and my love for anatomy and physiology, I enjoyed the information presented that helps the reader to understand the inflammatory process and how it affects the body and can lead to disease. Dr. Diana stresses the importance of balancing inflammation to help reduce discomfort and improve joint health. Chapter two explains how the joints work, the inflammation process and how it affects the joint structures. Chapters three, four and five stress a holistic treatment approach including nutrition, supplementation, and exercise, to help improve joint health and alleviate pain. The supplement section is backed by research presented in the appendix and gives examples of proven patient results. I found the exercise diagrams are easy to follow and include a suggested resistance and flexibility schedule.
Chapter six provides information on prep work and getting ready to start the eight week plan. It includes specific information on what foods, supplements, and exercise equipment you will need to implement the eight week program. You begin by discarding processed food items in your pantry and refrigerator to make room for healthy sources of protein, fresh fruits, and vegetables. There are great examples in the book that provide a list of recommended items from each food group. I really like the simplicity of the sample breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that are offered. The meals are easy to make with very few ingredients such as scrambled eggs with mozzarella cheese or turkey burgers with cheese and avocado. This chapter also has an easy to follow chart listing suggested vitamins and supplements with recommended dosages and potential side effects. Chapters seven through fourteen gives you specific guidelines for the program that starts with the introduction to recommended healthy foods, a gradual addition of supplements, and exercises that build over the eight week period.
This book is a great option for anyone who suffers with joint pain, inflammatory disease, or knee and hip issues. I especially like the non-surgical approach to treatment that offers research based results with a guide to simple and gradual changes in diet, supplementation, and exercise. Dr. Diana provides an easy to follow eight week program that promises to reduce inflammation and improve joint health without medication or surgery. In my work as a nurse and fitness instructor, I know many people with joint and knee issues that suffer with pain and would definitely recommend this book for those seeking a non-surgical treatment option.
