Spirituality is a byzantine word. Spirituality is something personal and distinct for everyone. Anyone who seeks to attain spirituality walks their own path. The dictionary defines the word ‘spirituality’ as the state, manner, quality or fact of being spiritual pertaining to the soul.
Spirituality is the inner path, the world inside us that seeks something higher than can be attained in the material world. Spirituality is connecting with something higher than the ego and being aware of the purpose and meaning of life.
Connecting to the planet and with everything that lives on it brings the soul deeper into a spiritual plane because awareness of and empathy for everything that exists is paramount to spirituality. Religion and spirituality are closely connected by benevolence, selflessness and inner peace.
Spirituality has a positive effect on mental health. Faith in something brings hope. Hopefulness leads to forgiveness of one's self and of others and with it comes love and social understanding. Prayers are answers and miracles do happen in the world of spirituality and religion.
The negative effect of spirituality, from some religious institutes, comes by way of encouragement of feeling guilty, fearfulness and low self-esteem but these negative sentiments can be overcome with the realisation that they are pointless, wasteful and time consuming mind-sets. Nothing comes from negative emotions except negative outcomes.
There are millions of websites and books in the world trying to explaining what spirituality is and how to achieve it, but spirituality comes from within. Spirituality has nothing to do with spiritualists who claim to communicate with the dead. The two subjects are as different as astrology and astronomy. A spiritual person is not necessarily a religious person who believes in God. The creator is known by many different names. Spirituality is the understanding of one’s self.
The path to enlightenment can become a lifestyle for some people with daily meditation leading to a higher state of consciousness. Prayer, ritual and meditation can deepen and strengthen religious belief. Remedies to life’s problems can be found within that particular belief system if applied daily and performed with a sincere heart and open mind.
Spirituality is the way in which people relate to themselves and the inhabitants of the world around them and religion is the belief in the source responsible for the creation of the world and everything created. Spirituality is looking within one’s self for the power to change a situation while religion looks towards an outside force to change one’s life.
Life is a learning curve and whichever road you chose to take, be it the spiritual or religious path, both will bring peace and harmony to your life. A nourished mind, body and soul will accomplish amazing deeds.
Appreciate the moment.
