Insect-free walking
Guest Author - Hellie T.

Insects can be very troublesome in the warm weather. Here are my Top Tips for keeping those bugs away from your skin when walking!

  • Don’t use perfume, hairspray or scented products before you go out walking – save them for when you get home – the scents will only attract insects.

  • Don’t put insect repellent on your skin but put it on your clothing instead. Try wearing a cap with insect repellent sprayed on it. Look out for trousers and tops already treated with insect repellent.

  • Try to avoid walking early in the morning or at dusk as this is the time most insects will be out and about looking for a meal.

  • Remember - do not wear dark coloured clothing or bright colours – insects are less attracted to lighter, paler colours.

  • If you wear a T shirt that is stretched tightly over you, insects can bite you through the fabric, if you wear loose clothing they only get a mouthful of T shirt!

  • Avoid walking by rivers, streams or ponds especially in the evenings.

  • Don’t give the insects a chance to get on your clothing - avoid long grass or vegetation

And remember to seek professional medical help if you are concerned in any way about an insect bite or sting.

Enjoy your walking
