Take a Walking Tour on your Vacation

Guest Author - Deborah Crawford

When you go on vacation or holiday, or even a business trip, one great way to see the sights and stay active is to take a walking tour. On a walking tour, you get to see things up close and personal, instead of from a window in a tour bus. You also get to see things others never do, making for much more interesting pictures and stories.

You can take a guided walking tour, which comes with a tour guide who tells you about what you are seeing, much like a tour guide on a bus would. Tour guides are usually great people who love sharing their knowledge and their favorite things about their cities. But, you can also take a self-guided tour, using someone else’s mapped tour or creating your own before you go.

The cost of guided walking tours is typically pretty moderate, ranging from under $5 USD to over $20 USD for tours of up to three hours. So, you get to enjoy the local scenery and hear the stories for about the cost of a day pass at a local gym or a visit to a movie theater. Plus, it is exercise! You can keep to your walking goals even while traveling.

Here are some examples and information on walking tours:

New York City Walking Tours by Big Onion Walking Tours are numerous and fascinating! From historic Harlem to Central Park to Chinatown to the Financial District, so many New York landmarks are included in their tours. This award-winning company can bring the Big Apple, er. . . Onion to life for you! A daily schedule on their website helps you prepare for your trip in advance, although picking just one tour a day is going to be hard!

If you are going to be in Philadelphia, try the Constitutional Walking Tour. This tour features such landmarks as the Liberty Bell, the Betsy Ross house and 31 other historical icons.

In France, try Paris walking tours(with English-speaking guides.)

And, if you are planning a vacation, explore using an active vacation company. Euro-bike and Walking Tours offers great tours of Europe, such as Scottish Highlands, Tuscany and Umbria, and Swiss Alps and Lakes. These tours average a week long and all are difficulty-rated from easy to challenging so you can pick one that matches your fitness level.

There’s no need to gain weight while enjoying the treats on your vacation or business trip. Just take a walk! You’ll burn off those calories and make some memories, too!
