It is heartbreaking to see the news from Haiti and our thoughts go out to those who have been so tragically affected by the earthquake and its aftermath, including the people of Haiti and the amazing aid workers who were working to make a difference even before the great disaster struck them down.
People with disabilities, and especially children with disabilities, are especially vulnerable where poverty and the basic necessities of living are difficult for most of the population. I have listed resources below that are linked to NGOs that either include or focus on people with disabilities, especially children, as they reach out to help everyone in the area.
Many families in the USA who are struggling with serious health, education, and social issues with our own sons and daughters are especially vulnerable to stories of the overwhelming plight of the children of Haiti. Wanting to join the effort to rescue and support those who are in such great need is a natural response and should be celebrated. There will be many opportunities to participate in fundraising, as well as raising awareness about what is needed, in the coming months. Hopefully we can all find ways to help, even if we cannot spare a donation in the present economy. If an individual, a community group or congregation in your neighborhood has fundraiser ideas that you can share with other families, please post a message at the Special Needs Children's forum. Inspiration reduces stress and gives us all greater hope.
