World Down Syndrome Day 2009 will be celebrated along with the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the genetic cause of Down syndrome. In 1949, Dr. Jerome Lejeune observed and reported the chromosomal anomaly in people with the syndrome having 47 chromosomes due to a third copy of chromosome 21.

Remember that whatever we do for individuals with disabilities will have positive effects on their mainstream peers and our communities. We will keep moving forward into a better future and should remember to take time out to appreciate the days we have together, now. Our children need our encouragement and positive energy more than ever. If you have friends, neighbors or relatives who always leave you with a smile, seek them out. Remember, you are probably that person in their lives, too.
