Adaptive Classes and Childhood Disability
http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art68462.asp
Adaptive classes for students with IEPs may be helpful, effective, and enjoyable places. But it is often better for exceptional children to grow up included with mainstream peers, who also benefit from their presence and the accommodations they bring to classrooms and playgrounds - and eventually to all their adult lives.
http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art68462.asp
Inclusion can and should happen everywhere in a child's life ~ it works well because mainstream kids crave inclusion, congeniality and friendship. Sometimes taking a break from one struggle to create relationships and opportunities elsewhere will refresh us so we can start again with a new perspective or support to find success in the original situation. Remember to write into your schedule some 'us' time for pure child-parent/parent-child relationship fun that disregards labels, experts and research. And please find a few minutes to laugh or cry with a friend when the smallest straw weighs heavily on the camel's back.
Please visit specialneedschildren.bellaonline.com for articles of interest to share with families, teachers and advocates. Search for topics at the website with a single word; and add "Pamela Wilson" or "bellaonline.com" to Google, Bing or other search engine queries. I volunteer my time so that others may benefit from my experience or resource research, in hopes of paying forward the help that I have found and still find from other parents, professionals and friends.
